This session was attended by our GP colleagues from Dover and Geeveston as well as one of our nursing staff from Dover.
This session was facilitated by myself and Jacinta Stewart. This was Jacinta’s first session in Geeveston.
Our topic was Advanced Life Support and served as a good revision of the algorithm as well as a practical demonstration of ALS and safe defibrillation. The session started with a table top exercise and case discussion which highlighted the importance of the prevention of cardiorespiratory arrest. One of our GPs had recently been involved with a young patient who had a cardiac arrest in the community.
Jacinta demonstrated placement of the pads and safe defibrillation, before the participants practised for themselves.
The session concluded with a simulation (using ISim) – unstable SVT leading to a cardiorespiratory arrest. The scenario highlighted the challenges faced by lone practitioners working in rural settings. There were helpful discussions and thought put into the practicalities of running an arrest given the limited personnel in both Geeveston and Dover. Both locations have AEDs rather than manual defibrillators. Jacinta is organising a future session with the clerical and medical/nursing staff of Dover and Geeveston so that they can have further practice in using their own equipment.
Finally, we discussed the recent projects in Tasmania which have mapped out the location of defibrillators state wide.
