Mental Health Act, Sepsis & Retrieval Guidelines
Drs Geoff Couser and Konrad Blackman joined Karen for their first EMET road trip up the gorgeous east coast of Tasmania to Swansea. Here they provided an informative session on their role as Clinical Consultant within Ambulance Tasmania, how they can assist staff in rural facilities in this role as well as when working in the emergency department at the Royal Hobart Hospital. A particularly helpful part of the talk was discussing what staff need to do with/for the patient in preparation for helicopter or road retrieval, with a great handout to go with it. Members of the group then participated in a scenario which focused on sepsis and Dr Couser provided some very important statistics and facts about incidence and management of sepsis. Finally Dr Blackman spoke about the management of distressed patients, or those under the influence of illicit drugs or alcohol; and guidelines around the Mental Health Act, and the role of health care professionals relating to the Act.
