Welcome to the second edition of the Hobart Hub Emergency Medicine Education and Training (EMET) newsletter. We are excited to write this edition of the newsletter and keep you up to date with the latest news and events that are happening in Southern Tasmania from the EMET Hobart Hub.
A (temporary) changing of the guard and a new bump
As you know, Amy has been borrowed from EMET by the TrackED team who needed her efficiency and amazing organisation skills in their lead-up to implementing a new computer software system to all the emergency departments in the state. Karen has stepped in to help for the duration of Amy’s absence and has enjoyed the chance to visit your facilities and learn about your work in the rural areas of southern Tasmania. Jen has continued her role as facilitator of the EMET program around an ever growing bump and, although she has now commenced maternity leave, will continue to be involved during her four months away from the office. Jen has also made sure that there are several FACEMs lined up to provide you with education on their specialised area of practice while she is on leave.

Education sessions
There have been a number of sessions conducted off-site during the last six months. Some of these sessions have been facilitated by either Amy or Karen with a nursing focus and have included topics such as Basic Life Support, assessment and recognition of an unwell child, chest pain assessment and interpreting ECGs. The participation and enthusiasm for these sessions has been great to see and we look forward to continuing them in the future.
The evening education sessions led by Jen in Geeveston and Swansea have looked at some trauma, paediatric and medical presentations using simulation with manikins and one ‘real’ patient with questionable acting skills. These sessions will continue throughout the year with the next session at Swansea focussing on the Mental Health Act and managing intoxicated patients; as well as some information on preparing patients for helicopter retrieval. This session will be taught by Drs Konrad Blackman and Geoff Couser. In Geeveston, Dr Ray Siauw will be conducting an interactive session on paediatric presentations and Paediatric Life Support.
Each session is designed around the suggestions we receive from the particular facility so please contact us with any ideas or topics you’d like to see covered. We can be contacted via email - emet.hobart@dhhs.tas.gov.au or phone - 62227573.
