The new term on the block for Respiratory Depression from opioids is now “Opioid-Induced Ventilatory Impairment” (or OIVI). It has been very topical in anaesthetics recently – in the literature and at conferences. What this new term is trying to encompass, is getting across the idea that there it is not just slowing of the respiratory rate but a triad of effects from opioids ie.
