Here is how,
We operate on a different level my friends, we have the honour and the burden to change peoples lives, we are in the fourth dimension- the only way punters get access to this dimension is when sickness or accidents happen. A level of privilege not seen since the Ancients - we bark orders, we hand judgements, we can change a trajectory.
We wheel about and push and probe.
But can we use it always to the good?
I think sometimes the best we can do is harm minimisation and some education. We cannot save everyone, I tried that once, really screwed my social life !!
We do our best-and remember - our best is heaps better than the usual.
We laugh and we cry and share moments alive as some fade out.
We do cry, we do sometimes die inside and feel that echoing harbour of still, cold voices- the also rans, the should have come earlier, the stupid bastards, the idiotic impulsives. The late diagnosis, the family cancer.
We try our very best and when that is not good enough, well, I think there is no one else that could any better.
And then we re group and start again.
I have been a Dem doctor on and off for the last ten years, and for the last ten tears..... I would not change it for the World, a group of fine individuals that work like a hive and mostly produce honey, sometimes a sting.
When you walk into work - remember 3 things,
1. The worst day of work is always better with your team
2. The ambo's ate all the cheese
3. The Reverend Stevens has got your back ..so do the job, nicely, politely and when they piss you off, go the the toilet and then shout and pull rude gestures, just like I do!!
Then wipe your arse, wash your hands and come back out and smile, God knows we need smiles and clean hands!
